Liliha Bakery

“Liliha Bakery”, on Kuakini St., has a history of more than 50 years. Locals love Liliha’s cocoa puffs. The shop has lots of bread, cakes and pastries and is a bakery as well as a coffee shop. They are only closed Monday but they open 24 hours from 6:00 a.m. Tuesday through 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

I ordered the Portuguese sausage omelet ($6.25). (You can choose omelet topping from cheese, spam, ham, Vienna sausage, Portuguese sausage or bacon.) Omelet was on the “breakfast” menu and included 1 scoop of rice (white or brown) and toast. The omelet had the flavor of butter and it was good with the Portuguese sausage. Also it was pleasantly large portion. The toast was really great!! It was normal toast but I loved it. The shop has only counter seats so you can watch what as they cook.

They seem so busy but they were so kind. The atmosphere was very local. Therefore you can touch and feel local mood. The shop was really busy! There were many people waiting and lined up!! I felt “Liliha Bakery” was really popular in
Hawaii. I want to try another bread and cake next time!! If you want to feel local it is a good shop for you. Also I think if you never tried cocoa puffs, you should try now!!

Sure Shot Cafe

I went to The Sure shot café in this week, and the store was on the 1249 Wilder Ave. Honolulu. That was a not large store, but we could relax in the place. If you have children, the parents can enjoy with children because there were some toys and some books, and also there were some Japanese books and comics. The smell was so good, and atmosphere was also great. The coffee shop has a lot of menus I was puzzled what to choose. I chose a chocolate scone and a bagel, and the scone has cheese and hums. It was delicious, and I was full up. I could spend good relaxing time with nice music in the coffee shop. If you have a car, you can go to very easily, and if you don’t have a car, you should go to there because this place was very cool place, and if this store is not crowded, you may study or work. The Sure shot café is not expensive, and you can get bagel about $5, and scone was cheaper than bagel. This store also had sandwiches, muffins or good smell’s coffee. If you go to the coffee shop, you can enjoy your breakfast, and if you want to relax with nice coffee and good food, you should go to Sure shot café. This coffee store is one of the most interesting stores in Hawaii.

Coffee Talk

here is a “COFFEE TALK” in Kaimuki. It is the twelfth year after starting a shop. The origin of shop’s name “COFFEE TALK” was taken from old NY comedy show. Of course there is a coffee shop, so they have plenty coffee menus and also they have tea, juice, “COFFEE TALK” shake and some food. The price was not so expensive such as house blend($1.00-), café late($3.25-), café moca’($3.50-),”COFFEE TALK” shake($3.50) and cake, scone and cookie($2.00). I ordered café moca ($4.00) and chocolate cone($2.00). When I was ordered I asked clerk “Which drink is much sweet?” and I choose café moca. (Because I can’t drink black coffee.) The taste was sweet and tasty. If you like sweet I recommend café moca. The size was big but I could drink with scone. There are two kinds of scone. A chocolate scone was soft and nice. A scone look like not so big but it has volume so it was good for my breakfast.

The shop opened from 5 o’clock in the morning. In the shop, they have some free computers and you can use own computer too. They have full breakfast only weekend.

A ceiling is high in store’s interior and the atmosphere was friendly. The clerk was friendly and she told us about the shop very much. I thought “COFFEE TALK” was friendlier than STAR BACKS COFFEE. The coffee has heart from clerk. If you love coffee, let’s go to the “COFFEE TALK”!!!

Champion's

Today, we went to the one of the most famous places in Hawaii that was Champion Malasadas. The place was 1926 S. Beretania St, this place may not find easily, and we can’t go to the place very easily. However you should go to there because we can get very sweet and tasty Malasada. The Malasada was very cheap that was 60¢!! We can get many Malasadas, and you can give some Malasadas for your friends and family. There were some different sweets and breakfast except Malasadas. Another advantage of the store is very quickly!! We ordered two dozens Malasadas though we can get soon, and Malasada was very hot. Next, I am going to explain why the Malasadas are very tasty or why everyone like Champion’s Malasada. The Malasada’s surface was so much sugar, and that was good, in addition, when we bit the Malasada, that was so crusty, and then the inside of Malasada was very soft. That’s why Champion’s Malasada was very good. If you came to Hawaii, or you stay in Hawaii, you should eat Malasdas because you would be happy, and you would love Hawaii. Please try the great sweets Chanpion’s Malasada.

Bogart's

There is “BOGART’S” in Monsarrat Ave near the Honolulu zoo so you can see Diamond Head clearly from shop. The shop is not so big but there were too many people from morning. There were plenty menu such as omelettes, sandwiches, bagel and coffee. However I felt omelettes and sandwiches are little bit expensive for breakfast. (I couldn’t remember price but these were about $8.) I ordered “Bagel Works ($3.50)”. It was only for breakfast menu. I could choose from 12 bagels. (Taste was Blueberry, plain, pistachio, everything and so on.) Also I could choose pistachio cheese cream or tomato cheese cream. I chose everything bagel and tomato cheese cream. A bagel was warmed so outside was crispy and inside was tender. It was very delicious!! Bagel has lots of flavor so I did not go off. Tomato cheese cream was plain and tasty. A bagel has fully fresh vegetables and quantity was just good. Therefore I thought it is great for breakfast. A salesclerk was friendly with good smile very much. When I ordered, I asked about menu and also I asked what bagel is recommended. A salesclerk explained me and she told me no1 bagel too. I was happy. Atmosphere was bright and I felt surf because the shop was near the beach. I ate many types of breakfast but it was the best breakfast for me!! Of course I want to go “BOGART’S” again!!! You should go there too!!!

Thus, people always line up inside the shop to buy coco puff or other food when I go to Liliha Bakery. It was first time to eat inside Liliha Bakery. I ate pancake. That was sooo tasty---- I like the pancake better than other shops that I went. The shop form was counter. It can not see the style as Liliha Bakery style in Japan, so I really interested in the style, and I could enjoy local style in this shop. The shop’s clerks are very interesting. Everyone often said joke. This Monday was my class mate’s birthday!!!!!! Therefore, we sung birthday song for her. The bakery is always crowded. I could understand why many people wait to eat meal, when I ate waffles. The waffles were very tasty!! The waffle had crisp surface, and sweet. I was very happy, and in addition I ate all waffles soon although the quantity was very big for me. The food was cooked in front of customers by some cooks, so we can see the process of food that was very interesting. Many people ordered a very big hotcake that looked very nice and smelled good. The omelets also looked good. We can get these food about $ 4~6. By the way, today is my birthday, so I ate a chocolate cake that was called dream. That was also tasty. Clerk put on the fire to a candle, and clerks are very friendly. I had good memory thanks to the bakery. The atmosphere is good. The table is just one line, so all customers can see the clerks. The name came from comedy show. The coffee shop started about 20 years ago. The coffee shop has a lot of interesting objects such as pictures that were drawn for Coffee Talk of the shop. The most interesting object was a coffee cup that made of corrugated paper. The object is displayed outside’s place. That was very interesting for me. Primarily, we can use internet free in the coffee shop. It was very useful for us. Then, the coffee shops’ clerks were very kind and one of the clerks accepted our interview very happily. I really appreciated her attitude. Atmosphere was like dream world. It rarely can be seen in Japan, so I really could enjoy. Anyway, I ate chocolate & toffee sweet. This is kinds of scone. Caramel sauce was there with chocolate inside the sweet. That was very tasty!!!! Then, I also drank coffee. I put in chocolate powder inside the coffee. Usually, I don’t drink coffee, but it was very delicious and I could drink everything. I really liked this coffee shop. I believe that everyone will like the Coffee Talk. Andy's Sandwiches and Smoothies

Andy’s started in 1977 and greets the 30th in this year. At first, the shop’s name was “Manoa health market” but everybody knew about Andy so the name became “Andy’s”. The reason why Andy is famous is that he did business as a post office before he started “Andy’s”.

Andy’s has plenty menu for breakfast such as pancakes($3.50-), eggs($2.25-), French toast($3.99), omelets($4.50-), salad($3.99-), soup($2.45-) , sandwiches($4.10-) and smoothies($2.60-). Especially, omelets, sandwiches and smoothies have lots of kinds. The price was reasonable, and the volume was enough too. I ordered mushroom cheese omelets and I watched everybody eating potatoes so I ordered home style potatoes ($2.50) too. Taste was homey and feels nostalgia. The mushroom cheese omelet was delicious because cheese was melted. Other kinds of omelets looked very yummy too! A side was pretty big but I could eat all. The potato was very nice too. It was little bit salty but an omelet was bland so there are nice matching!! I thought both were good for breakfast. When you order breakfast, you can drink free coffee!! “Andy’s” use fresh cooking ingredient and they baking bread everyday. Salesclerks seem families and they are cheerful and very friendly. Customer was almost local people and they are kind and friendly more than city people. The atmosphere was homey and snug. The shop was not so big, but I like that atmosphere and people. When you go to the shop you can eat homey taste and also you can feel homey atmosphere. If you are lucky you may meet Andy’s Andy!?!!!!

Andy's - No1 is always ALOHA

We planned to go to Liliha Bakery, but regrettably, the store was closed today. That’s why we tried a new restaurant. We found the nice restaurant that was Manoa Health Market. The restaurant was a little bit small palace, but the inside of the restaurant was so energetic. The workers are very friendly, and they asked our order with very nice smile. I ordered spinach cheese omelets, and also they have eggs, potato, sandwich and pancake. We can get each foods about 3~6 dollar. That was cheap. The taste was very good, and the omelet had a lot of ingredient. Potato also looked like nice. Background music was Hawaiian music, so we can spend a good breakfast time with music. We could interview a manager that is Andy. He is very interesting person, and also he has very young mind. “First time, the store was a post office, but the post office was very busy, especially Christmas time. He changed the restaurant from post office in 1977. Now, the restaurant has many local customers. Everyday, breads vegetables are fresh.” We asked No.1 food, and he said that No1 is always ALOHA. That means people is most important, and foods are always second. He really takes care of customers. His grand children work this place too, so the restaurant is homey. They are cheerful people, and let’s go to the restaurant to meet happy clerks.

Andy's - roast beef, cheese, and avocado

This week we were going to go Liliha Bakery on Kuakini Street to eat coco puffs, but the shop was closed. Therefore, went to Andy’s in Manoa valley. Andy’s is located next to star backs on We could interview the shop’s owner Andy. He was very kind for us and he took our interview very readily. He said that he opened this shop about 30 years ago. Before he opens this shop, he worked post office. However, the job was very busy especially Christmas times. Thus he changed his job post office into lunch shop. I thought that he looks like he enjoys his life now. Although I met him first time, he was like our daddy. I believe that I want to be like Andy who enjoys his life very much. Anyway, the shop had a lot of menus. It was difficult for me to decide. Then, I ordered sandwiches with roast beef, cheese, and avocado!!! Inside of the sandwiches, lots of roast beef, and vegetable. That was so delicious and fresh. Atmosphere was like at home. I could feel calm. I think that if you go there one time, you will want to go there again certainly. I just really want to know everyone, Andy was such a nice and good person♪♪

Andy's is a friendly store

This Monday morning, Nick originally drove us to the Liliha Bakery for breakfast, but when we got the place, it closed; as a result, we went to Andy’s for our breakfast. Andy’s, the name is just because of the founder’s name, is opened 30 years. Andy said that “Aloha is No.1 and everything else is No.2.” (Andy, 2007) In the store, they are all families, and their food is focused on healthy, so we don’t have to worry about the food is healthy or not. There are a lot of foods we can choose, and I chose banana pancakes because I like to eat banana. I spent 4.18 dollars buying banana pancakes, but it is delicious. And there are three pieces of banana pancakes per dish. After we order the dishes, we have to go to the other desk to pay; it is fun and new for me. Because of the small store, everyone is friendly so that we can have a lot of chances to talk to the customers, workers and the founders. I think that the founder want to make us a big family.

The Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke.( http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/, 2005 )” so this shop is 54th in this year. Besides, according to the website, “We now have over one hundred franchises from coast to coast.(http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/, 2005)” In Hawaii, there are 2 shops by Honolulu. It is 6:00 to 14:00 in business hours of The Original Pancake House (OPH). They have a big menu including pancakes, waffles, crepes, meats, omelettes and cereals. Moreover they have some specialties too. The price is around 8 dollars including tip.

I ordered “blueberry pancakes” but it was very disappointing for me. The reason why pancakes was slightly too salty to match with blueberry. The blueberry taste was inimitableness which it seems to preserve blueberry with tea but soft and fluffy of pancake was really good. The reason why pancake was fluffy is “Our recipes demand only the very finest of ingredients, such as 93 score butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and our own recipe sourdough starter. (http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/,2005)“

I want to try another taste of pancake and omelettes and also I want to try some specialties such as apple pancake ($9.25) and Dutch baby ($8.00).

The waitress made busy restlessly. There is always still a waitress having coffee so service of coffee is substantial. The waitresses were friendly but I think ASAHI grill was more friendly.

The atmosphere was pretty because OPH are unified by brown and it is like a country. When I went to OPH, it was weekday’s morning at 9:00 however there were crowded very much. An hour later, the visitor became a half. Most of visitor was local people but there was Japanese tourist too.

If you want to go, I recommend the time between breakfast and lunch!!!

The place was large, and there were many tables. The restaurant’s atmosphere is good mood and good smell, and the clerks served food quickly. The service was good too. I ate banana pancakes. These are very tasty, and also the volume was very big. We can get 5 pancakes. The pancake is very soft and sweet. Next time, I want to eat apple pancake because it looks very nice. It was very crowed when I went to there. Most of the tables sat people, so I could feel the shop is very famous for local people or newcomers. The Original Pancake House located near Gyukaku on Kapiolani street. I ordered Portuguese sausage and eggs for breakfast. Then, I could choose rice, pancake or potato. I chose rice, but I little bit regretted I didn’t choose pancakes because the restaurant famous for pancakes. However, one of my classmates gave me banana pancake. It was very tasty. The volume was very good big, so she couldn’t finish the meal. Most of Japanese people can’t finish the meal. Therefore, I recommend when you go the Original Pancake House, you should share with your friends or family. The restaurant’s atmosphere was homey, and I could feel good mood for old time and most of clerks were old women or men. It was so comfortable for me. You should go one time!!!!!

Asahi grill

We went to the Asahi grill in this week. I was looking forward to going to the restaurant because I didn’t know the place, and my friends also never go to there. The place was 515 Ward Ave. Honolulu HI 96814, and that was near Ward Center and next to Kanai Tofu Factory. The place wasn’t lucid, but we can take the bus. We can go to the place at 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The restaurant’s owner is Masato Hatakeyama. He is Japanese therefore they have some Japanese Food. The restaurant’s atmosphere is very good because many local people stay in there that is good for learning English. A reason of good atmosphere is good music. Although it was a little bit cold, it doesn’t matter because we can get a very tasty oxtail soup. Service was also good because clerks were very friendly, cheerfulness and kindness, and they told us recommendatory menu. The best popular menu was oxtail soup, and number 2 was kim chee fried rice. Other great menu was fried rice, hamburger steak, loco moco, chicken cutlet and pork cutlet and Banana pancake. I think the foods are big quantity, but we can take out the food. The price was cheep, and especially they have cheap food in the morning. We can get food about $5~10. I recommend that you go to in the morning. I ate fried rice that was very tasty. There were sunny-side up eggs on the rice. When I ate that, I became happy. The restaurant is not so popular for tourist, but local people love the place. Please go to Asahi Grill to get delicious food.

Asahi grill’s atmosphere was like Hawaiian coffee shop and it is like a home, an atmosphere I wanted to use anytime willingly.

If you have never been to Asahi grill, you should go right away!!

Next to Kanai Tofu Factory is Asahi Grill

Asahi Grill's Loco Moco was very good big

On Monday, April 23, we went to Asahi Grill on field trip in class. Today, I’m going to introduce about Asahi Grill. First, we greeted a woman which is one of the waitresses, and we talk about we want to interview about Asahi Grill and we’ll put on our internet site. Then, the clerk responded hospitality “that’s good” and she taught us favorite food that were oxtail soup, and banana pancake. We ordered Loco Moco, fried rice, oxtail soup, banana pancake, and kim chee fried rice. I ate kim chee fried rice mainly that was good taste. Kim chee was not too much spicy and season was my liking season. Then, we shared other meals. Loco Moco was very good volume. I like the top of meat loaf. Then, fried rice’s taste was like good old taste. When I tried Oxtail soup, I felt spicy smell. It was first time to try oxtail soup, but I like it. Banana pancake was very tasty. Banana put in inside the pancakes. It was very sweet and I think portion was good quantity for me. Price was not so expensive. Banana pancake was very cheap. I recommend the banana pancakes. Ambience was very calm. I felt that was comfortable. The Asahi Grill located near the Blaisdell Arena. You can go about five minutes to use by bus from Waikiki. You should go there if you visit Hawaii or live in Hawaii. I promise that you could have good time in there.

Leonard's Malasada

Leonard’s is one of the most popular bakeries in Hawaii. Leonard’s is having its’ 55th anniversary this year!! It has a long history. Leonard’s was established as a bakery in 1952. The bakery prospered. Not long after opening, Leonard's mother suggested making malasadas for Shrove Tuesday. It is a Portuguese tradition. Although thinking it may be too ethnic, Leonard's bakers complied. Malasadas were a huge hit. And, the appetite for malasadas in Hawaii was born.

Due to Leonard's popularity Leonard required a larger, more modern facility, moving into their present location at 933 Kapahulu Avenue in 1957. The atmosphere of Leonard’s looks pretty and nostalgic. The inside is very fancy.

There are 6 kinds of Malasadas. They have white sugar, Cinnamon, custard cream, chocolate, coconut and seasonal varieties.(March and April are pineapple cream.) White sugar and cinnamon are 66 cents each. Other kinds are 89 cents each. Malasada’s taste was really good!!! They fry it after ordering so it is always fresh. The outside is crunchy, and the inside is soft and fluffy. It looks sweet but it’s not so sweet. Accordingly I wanted to eat more!! There are colorful cakes or cookies as well as a lot ofMalasadas. There are big wedding cakes, too.

If I ask some questions, the clerks always answer to me cheerfully. Inside the shop’s atmosphere is very traditional. There is a lot of staff that resemble Leonard’s character. You should go to Leonard’s if you have a chance.

The Malasada was a great hit

First, Leonard worked at Snowflake Bakery until he set up Leonard's Bakery in 1952. He sold Malasadas in a white and red wagon. The Malasada was a great hit, and Leonard's Bakery became popular. Leonard required a larger shop, and the shop was moved into their present location at 933 Kapahulu Avenue in 1957.

First time, Malasada was made by Portuguese, and Leonard’s was first Malasada’s shop in Hawaii. When I went to the Leonard’s, many people stayed in the store. The store always has many people, and the store is very popular because the Malasadas are very cheap and tasty. Leonard’s is loved by many people for a long time. Leonard's Malasada

Yesterday I took my Core 4 class to Leonard's Malasada. We were studying the reading section of TOEFL and I could tell my students had had enough. I decided it was time for Hawaiian style donuts, so we got in the HTIC car and took off. Within 15 minutes we were already back in class eating the sugary, sweet fried dough and discussing the next day's presentations.

HTIC Breakfast Club

"A classroom without walls, but with breakfast"

After returning from Leonard's Malasada, I decided that my class, Core 4, and I should go get breakfast once a week, but we needed a way for these weekly excursions to fit our class. Thus this blog was created to help students document their feelings and thoughts and help the community find a good place to get breakfast and malasadas in Honolulu.
